National Badminton League: Derby and Loughborough record first wins

Team Derby and Lougborough Sport won their first matches of the season on Monday night as the bottom two sides finally got off the mark.

With one match left in the regular season of the inaugural NBL, the race for a top four place in June’s finals will now go to the wire next month after Match Night 5 saw the table turned on its head.

Team Derby thrashed Milton Keynes 5-0 while Loughborough Sport beat hosts Birmingham Lions 4-1.

The defeat of Milton Keynes Badminton meant that they went from fourth to last and will now need a strong showing against Loughborough Sport to have a chance of making it to the play-offs.

Meanwhile, top-of-the-table Surrey Smashers endured a first defeat of the campaign as the Guildford franchise went down 4-1 on the road at University of Nottingham.

Donna Kellogg of Derby said: “I’m really pleased to win the match and every rubber counts. The arena is fantastic, I’ve played badminton around the world and to be able to come and play in Derby at such a great facility is amazing. We had great support out there tonight!”

Tickets for the remaining NBL fixtures involving all six teams are available to purchase through Sky Tickets:
